Adult Practical Writing Skills

Course 1

You know what you want to say—but putting it into writing can be difficult.

You know what you want to say—but putting it into writing can be difficult.
Perhaps you struggle to begin a message, organise your ideas or explain what you need. Perhaps your writing makes sense to you, but the reader still asks for clarification.
This course helps you turn your ideas into clear, purposeful writing for everyday adult life.

Who is this course for?

Adults and young adults who can already communicate in everyday English but want more confidence and independence when writing.
You do not need perfect grammar. You should be able to understand everyday written English and write several understandable sentences on your own.

What will you practise?

You will learn to:

  • Decide why you are writing and who needs to understand your message.
  • Choose relevant information.
  • Write clearer sentences and organise your ideas.
  • Adapt your message to its reader and purpose.
  • Check and improve your own writing.
  • The activities use practical situations such as requests, training enquiries and workplace communication.
  • How the lessons work

How the lessons work

You will write, review your attempt, compare it with an example and revise your own work.

The examples are there to help you understand writing decisions—not to give you something to copy.

Keep your first and revised drafts. Together, they will help you see what is changing.

Begin here

Start with the Diagnostic Writing Baseline

Write a short message independently before looking at examples. Then review and revise it to identify your starting point.

Lesson 1 · Know What You Need to Say

Learn to answer three questions before drafting:

WHY am I writing?
WHO am I writing to?
WHAT is my main message?

About the course

The planned pilot includes a diagnostic, twelve lessons across three modules and a final practical assessment. Further lessons are being prepared.

For the opening activities, use your own document or notebook to save your responses. This website does not automatically save your writing.

The goal is to become a writer who can make clear decisions independently.
